I received both my BS in Nutrition and my MA in Counseling from Bastyr University. My passion is in preventing and treating eating disorders. I have specializing in treating eating disorders for over 10 years. My clinical career it has been in the fields of mental health and substance abuse treatment. I have worked on and off providing outpatient drug and alcohol treatment, involving groups and individuals. As a therapist as well as a business consultant and coach, I work with individuals, couples, families and organizations. I work from a systemic orientation, which means that problems are embedded in a complex relational system rather than isolated in an individual. I will help you create healthier ways to be in relationship with others, whether it is your family, coworkers, collegues, and/or friends.

I like to have a conversation. The idea of counseling and being "in therapy" can be overwhelming. Allowing yourself to be vulnerable in this way can seem like too great an undertaking. First is a conversation. We start here to learn which therapeutic approach works best for you. The treatment methods and techniques are varied depending on the client's needs and goals. My goal is to help each client identify what is most impacting and affecting their well-being, and helping to find correlating themes in stressors that may initially seem unrelated but taxing.
I have been a counselor for 15 years. I strive to create a safe environment in which the client is able to explore and identify areas of their life that have been problematic. It is important to me to get to know my clients and meet them on a moment-to-moment basis and help by entering their world. My approach focuses on the person and assists in the growth process.
It is of my personal belief that within most of us lies the resources to live a happy life. Unfortunately, things such as trauma, environmental stressors, or a lack of skills can get in the way of our ability to access these resources. Think of the last time you felt an overwhelming sense of peace, whether that be while soaking in a beautiful scenery, or watching children play. This "peace," or what I call "True Self," is within all of us.
Life is ever changing and there are times when we need someone who is impartial and nonjudgmental to help us through. As a licensed counselor I provide that support as well as a safe environment for individuals to express themselves freely and openly without fear of being shamed, embarrassed or criticized for their thoughts and/or feelings. I see many clients with depression and anxiety and have found Cognitive therapy has many benefits. The skill of mindfulness is one that I practice daily and, after teaching the client, encourage them to use it on a daily basis. I am now a registered hypnotherapist so I can now offer hypnosis
NOT ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS AT THIS TIME. Sometimes life gets a little tricky and learning to navigate through it sometimes means asking for help. I enjoy working with people struggling through various things in their life, whether that be just for themselves, for their children or in relationships with others. I've been working in mental health for just over 8 years and have worked with nearly every population. My passion is working with kids and their parents, but I have worked with everyone from young children to the elderly and have found ways to help them be more successful in managing stressors.
I believe that we all have things in life that we need help dealing with or working through. As a counselor I provide a safe, confidential, and nonjudgmental place for people to get the help they are seeking. I use several therapeutic modalities including cognitive behavioral, EMDR, Internal Family Systems, solution focused and emotional focused therapy to name a few. When working with couples I use the Gottman marriage approach as well as attachment therapy. I may explore with the client their past and present in order to promote self-discovery/awareness that will assist them with the outcome they desire.
I work with a variety of clients from all walks of life. People attend counseling for many reasons, but most of them stem either from difficulties in relationship with others or with self and from some of the "givens" in life, including: death, isolation, lack of meaning, freedom and responsibility. Those who seek counseling services want to feel happy, live more in line with how they view their world, and/or get along better in their significant relationships.

I feel passionate about working with individuals who are longing to find or reconnect with a sense of Self. Somehow life isn't working; something's "off." Whether searching for identity while transitioning to independence; wanting to rediscover who we are after caring for others; riding the roller coaster of grieving a death, divorce or another major life event to surviving abusive and/or confusing relationship(s), we all experience pain and confusion at times. Counseling can help open awareness to new and healthier ways to respond to life's challenges and hopefully thrive.
Are you reeling from the gravity of world events since 2020? Feeling overwhelmed? Frustrated? Disillusioned? Were you already stressed prior to 2020? Often current events tug at past unresolved experiences causing over-pronounced reactions in the here & now. I'm here to help. I have the specific & necessary experience, particularly with traumatic and/or disturbing events, to help you address your individual issues. Our work together will maximize your capacity for transformation. I look forward to meeting you.

Most of my clinical career has been serving juvenile justice involved, incarcerated youthful offenders with significant mental health needs. I am able to quickly build relationships and begin working towards change. I recognize that when a person is seeking help it isn't their best day or period of time in their life. No matter your history or what you may have to share, I am ready to assist. I will treat you with the utmost of respect and in a confidential manner. My goal is to always send you out the door feeling better than when you came in.
We all go through difficult times in our lives and at times we are able to overcome the challenges on our own, other times it is helpful to seek support through therapy to help acquire new skills to help us live the life we hope for ourselves. As your therapist, I'm committed to support you and walk with you through this journey to accomplish your goals.
I view counseling as a chance for you to explore a deeper understanding of yourself while working to achieve a complete and healthy life. In our time together, I hope to develop a trusting therapeutic relationship in which we can identify strengths, support, and effective measures to be taken to live a more meaningful life. With the use of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), psychoeducation, and the incorporation of Mindfulness and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) techniques, we will examine how to overcome both internal and external obstacles to reach your goals by understanding the past, but working toward a healthy future.
The most rewarding and fulfilling times in our lives are the times when we feel respected, connected and heard. Often, we feel that our efforts fall short or we are just unable to communicate our desired intentions, either at work or in our personal or family relationships. Sometimes, we need the help of a professional therapist to improve our self-esteem, become more effective communicators or enhance our relationship dynamics. Ms. Benson specializes in helping her clients achieve understanding and mastery over their issues.
Authentic living can be difficult. Life's paths often do not warn of the hardships that lay ahead. Building a trusting relationship with you and creating an environment that you can explore your hardships is paramount to me. Whether you are an individual or a couple, I strive to bring to light the problematic behaviors and thought patterns that interfere in your life, in order to help you make choices that promote a more congruent and authentic living experience. Theoretically, I am psychodynamically driven with strong ties to cognitive therapies but use a variety of techniques to meet your needs.
Dr. Ostrom is able to provide a wide range of evaluations and provide psychotherapy. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Mindfulness Meditation all have been well researched and shown to be effective. These are the therapeutic approaches that your treatment approach will be based on. I have complete confidence that working as a team we can meet your goals. Clients view me as always professional, but down to earth.
